Your Inner Voice

I was just on Oprah’s new website for her new network called “OWN” and she asked a question which intrigued me to post an answer. The question was “Do you believe everyone has an inner voice? If so, how much do you let it guide your decisions and influence your actions? How do you “get still enough” to listen? I wanted to share my answer with all of you.

I believe we all have an inner voice. It’s the voice of our soul. As a society we are so over stimulated and desensitized. We are programmed to be busy all the time and if we aren’t we feel useless. When I am on the train or bus I notice that people are either on their blackberry texting or on the phone. If we allowed ourselves to just be still we will feel our emotions and hear our inner voice. I think people keep busy so they don’t have to hear that voice. They are afraid of what it might say. I was in a class once where we all had to be silent and just breathe deeply for 30 minutes. After about 20 minutes three people started to cry. The silence brought up many feelings that keeping busy helped them avoid. After the 30 minutes all three felt so much better and lighter. It made them realize the importance of letting go. For me, I follow my intuition for it never steers me wrong. If something doesn’t feel right I don’t do it. I am also a strong believer in meditation. I meditate daily because it’s easy to get caught up in the pace of life. The silence clears my head so good thoughts and ideas have space to come in but meditation is a great spiritual cleansing and a reminder that silence is indeed golden!

So take time from your day to just be silent. You will be surprised how much you can learn about yourself!

Peace
