The Medicinal Kitchen: Everyday Herbs with Healing Powers

You don’t need a specialty apothecary or a medicine cabinet full of supplements to begin healing. Sometimes, the best remedies are already in your kitchen. Herbs like ginger, garlic, and thyme aren’t just flavorful, they are nature's medicine that support your body’s natural ability to heal. I’ve been turning to all three a lot lately with clients and felt inspired to share why they’ve been so helpful.

Ginger: The Inflammation Tamer

Used for thousands of years in traditional medicine, ginger is a powerhouse for calming inflammation and soothing digestive issues. It’s especially helpful for:

  • Nausea (from motion sickness to morning sickness)

  • Bloating and sluggish digestion

  • Joint pain or chronic inflammation

How to use it: I simply simmer a few slices in hot water, or add grated ginger to soups, stir-fries, or smoothies.

Garlic: Nature’s Antibiotic

Garlic has potent antimicrobial properties that can help the body fight off viruses, bacteria, and even fungi. It's also great for:

  • Immune support during cold and flu season

  • Cardiovascular health (it helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol)

  • Respiratory congestion

How to use it: Raw garlic is most potent.  Mince or finely chop a clove and letting it sit for 10 minutes before adding it to food. Roasted garlic is gentler but still beneficial.

Thyme: The Respiratory Herb

This fragrant herb is often overlooked, but it’s great for supporting respiratory health. Thyme is:

  • Antibacterial and antiviral

  • Helpful for coughs, bronchitis, and chest tightness

  • A natural expectorant (it helps clear mucus)

How to use it: Steep fresh or dried thyme in hot water for a simple tea, or add it liberally to roasted vegetables and soups. If I am roasting a chicken or turkey, I stuff the cavity with thyme and garlic.

I look forward to my afternoon cup of herbal tea. It’s a simple ritual that reminds me to pause, breathe, and be present, something we could all use a little more of.
